Gordon A Spurgeon, 83 years old, from Vincennes, Indiana passed away May 1, 2023, at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the last survivor of seven children born to Jesse and Luelia (Ruth) Spurgeon. He was a Lincoln Class of 1957 graduate. After serving in the U.S. Army after high school, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen Luking on November 17, 1962. She proceeded him in death. He worked for over twenty-five years at Essex Wire, Concast Division in Vincennes as a Shift Supervisor before retiring in his late fifties to enjoy some fishing and hunting. He returned to the work force a few years later, spending another twenty-two years working at the Vincennes and for a brief time, Washington, Walmart stores where he loved telling stories, making friends, fixing things, and making a difference. He will be remembered as a good husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, great grandpa, and friend. And his stories were always epic. He is survived by his children Bradley Spurgeon and Christopher (Marcie) Spurgeon; grandchildren Alex (Emily) Spurgeon, Blake Spurgeon, Luke Spurgeon, and Emma Spurgeon; great-grandchildren Trace Spurgeon, Milo Spurgeon, and Felix Spurgeon; sister-in law Margaret (Jerry) Hislip; brothers-in-law John (Sue) Luking and Jim (Nancy) Luking; ex-daughter-in-law Beth Thacker; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings: Norma (Limuel) Atkins, Ray Spurgeon, John Spurgeon, Dan Spurgeon, Mary Helen (Jack) Stein, Thelma (Dale) Evans. He loved the outdoors and fishing on the White River, spending time at his cabin, and spending time with his family. He was also a devoted St. Louis Cardinals Fan. Goodwin-Sievers is honored and entrusted with the care of Mr. Spurgeon. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at 1pm at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family requests that if you would like to do something as a memorial, please plant a tree, take a kid fishing, or do something to make someplace better than you found it.
