Shirley Faye (Newton) Steen, 86, of Washington, passed away on October 26, 2022 at the Villages of Oakridge. She was born in Daviess County on November 14, 1935 to Cecil and Irene (Bateman) Newton. She was a member of Bethel North Methodist Church, formally the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Shirley attended Elmore Township School until her eighth grade, moving to Washington and graduating in 1953. Shirley married Kenneth R. Steen on June 22, 1958, and was happily married for 64 years. Shirley worked at McCord Corporation as a payroll clerk, accounting clerk, and in the computer department for 20 years. She worked at the State Bank as a bookkeeper and teller retiring in December 1997. She was also a sales representative for Home Interior and Gifts. Shirley loved music being in the school band. singing, song leader, and choir director at the church for several years. She also was a member of the Praise team at the Bethel North Church. She loved crafts, flower arranging, decorating the church for services for several years, and home decorating. She is survived by her husband Kenneth Steen; sister Harriet (Leon) Petty of Lebanon, Indiana; and sister-in-law Annalee Buse Harrisburg, Virginia; along with several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Irene Newton; in laws Aubrey and Alma Steen; sister Wilma Power; brothers Kenneth Newton and Herbert Newton; brothers in laws Richard Power, Stan Jones, Keith Buse; sisters in law Karen Jones, Ernestine Newton, Betty Newton; and nephews David Petty and Gary Newton. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday October 31, 2022 at Goodwin Sievers Funeral Home in Washington with Tom Watson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the service time. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
