Verna Aline Yates-Murphy, 85, passed away at 1:08 a.m. January 29, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Verna was born on November 19, 1927 in Vincennes the daughter of Andrew J. and Emma (Evans) Pea. She married Clyde "Bud" Yates on October 11, 1947, and he preceded her in death on, April 5, 1992, she then married Robert Murphy on November 15, 1997, and he preceded her in death on June 15, 2010.Verna was a member of First Church of God and worked as a secretary for First Baptist Church, Vincennes Welding, Custom Farm Service and the Purdue Extension Office. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, she loved to travel and she helped teach Sunday school. Several years back she was the Sunday School Secretary. Verna was also a member of the Meadowlark Homemakers Club.Survivors include her son, Steven Yates and his wife, Marilyn of Olney, IL; daughter, Kelly Griggs and her husband, Tom of Evansville; two grandchildren, Lyndsey Griggs, Leah Griggs; four great grandchildren, Justice Ricketts, Cayden Griggs, Byron Arnold, Alyvia Siniard; sisters, Sharon Rogers of Ft. Wayne; Betty Graham of Roy, Utah; brother, Andrew Pea, Jr. of Vincennes. Verna was preceded in death by sisters, Harriett Revis, Dorothy Hunckler, Norma Jean Pea and brothers, Ronald Pea and William Pea.Funeral services for Verna will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway with Pastor Georg Karl and Pastor Fred Nocus officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with Verna's family on Friday from 5-7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent at www.goodwinfamilyfh.com.
