Bertie Lewis Taylor, better known as Bert, 97, passed away peacefully at 3:16 am on November 13, 2025, at the Villages at Oakridge in Washington, IN. Bert was born on August 5, 1928, in Knox County, IN the son of Alpha and Gertrude (Wyant) Taylor. He married Thelma Helderman on September 18, 1948, and she preceded him in death on November 29, 2008.
Bert was a lifetime member of Hamline Chapel United Methodist Church and served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a 1945 graduate of Monroe City High School. Bert enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He was proud of the fact that he built many wood working projects and some of them are on display at the Monroe City Blue Jean Center. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and loved his wife.
Survivors include his children, Patty James of Washington, IN, Sharon Bennett of Petersburg, IN, Karen Ellerman of Indianapolis, IN, Wesley Taylor and his wife Penny of Washington, IN; his sister, Beverly McCoy of Monroe City, IN; grandchildren, Trudy Wessell and her husband Chuck, Tiffany Williams and her husband John Paul, Tracey Moffett, Shannon Pierce, Michelle Pierce, Elizabeth Taylor, Dana Taylor, Jody Claridge and her husband Phil, Sondra Collins and her husband Jason, Dannica Wehlage and her husband Bryan, Wesley Taylor and his wife Lindsay, Crystal McBride and her husband Ross, Amy Taylor; thirty four great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren and one on the way. Bert is preceded in death by his parents, Alpha and Gertrude Taylor, sisters, Rhoda Owens and Ada Cannon, and his son, Mike Taylor.
Friends may visit with Bert's family from 4-7 pm on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 524 Broadway, Vincennes, IN 47591. Bert's funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home and he will be laid to rest in Hamline Chapel Cemetery next to his wife Thelma.
