Charles William Reinhart, warmly known to many as Chuck, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at the age of 77. His life, spanning from November 27, 1948, was distinguished by a deep devotion to family, scholarship, and community, leaving an indelible legacy in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born to Charles and Dorothy Reinhart, Chuck grew up with a passion for learning and curiosity that would guide his entire journey. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1966 and continued his academic pursuits at Indiana University, earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1970. His commitment to education and the humanities culminated in a PhD from Indiana University in 1978-a testament to his scholarly dedication.
Chuck began a remarkable career at Vincennes University, where he profoundly influenced both students and colleagues. Rising to serve as Chair of the English Department, and later as Dean of the Humanities, Chuck was known not only for his mastery of English literature-especially the works of William Blake-but also for his ability to inspire and mentor those around him. His leadership and integrity have left a lasting imprint on the institution and the broader educational community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chuck was a man of many interests. He found serenity photographing the night sky, a passion that led him to share his celestial images with the public at the Northwest Territory Art Guild and the Open Gallery. His appreciation for poetry and literature, combined with his love for nature and the universe, reflected his contemplative spirit.
Chuck's heart was always with his family. He shared years of adventure and love with his beloved wife, Rita (Kotter) Reinhart, to whom he proposed at the Matterhorn in Switzerland-an act emblematic of the depth and romance of their bond. Though Rita preceded him in passing, her memory was a source of joy and strength for him.
He is survived by his son Adam Reinhart, his sister Susan Schmeling, and many nieces and nephews. Also passing before him are his parents and sister Sally Crowe. The Reinhart family will long cherish memories of family vacations to destinations such as Alaska, Europe, and the Caribbean, and of the many evenings spent at Kelso's, where laughter and camaraderie abounded.
Chuck was also a dedicated member of St. John's Catholic Church, nurturing values and friendships that sustained him throughout his life. A loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Indiana University football and basketball teams, he brought the same passion and enthusiasm to following sports as he did to every endeavor.
Friends, family, colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by Chuck are invited to remember and honor him at a visitation on June 26, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Both will be held at Goodwin-Sievers Family Funeral Home, 524 Broadway Street, Vincennes, Indiana.
Charles William Reinhart's life was marked by an abiding love of learning, a generosity of spirit, and a commitment to the people and pursuits he held dear. He will be dearly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated by those privileged to have walked alongside him.The family wishes to thank Bridgepointe Health Campus, Aseracare Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospital, Select Specialty Hospital, and Deaconess for their care of Chuck during his illness.
Goodwin-Sievers is honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Chuck and his family.
