Glenda Joyce Shoultz Schaefer died Tuesday morning in Bloomington. She was 76.
She was born on July 9, 1949 in Vincennes to Jack H. and Doris J. (Brewer) Shoultz and grew up in Vincennes and Evansville. She was involved in Central United Methodist Church youth activities as a teen. She graduated from Central High School in Evansville and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
She began her teaching career in 1971 at Jac-Cen-Del School Corp. in Ripley County, and returned to Vincennes in 1974 to teach English and journalism at the South Knox School Corp. She was twice listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and later chaired the school’s English department.
In June 1982, she married fellow teacher Hugh Schaefer at Central United Methodist Church in Evansville. They were married for 40 years, and traveled widely around the country, visiting 49 states. She attended the Vincennes First Baptist Church.
After her retirement from teaching, she managed the Turn the Page Bookstore in Vincennes and later worked in the billing office at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.
Surviving are a stepson, Chad Schaefer of Vincennes, four cousins, Debra Kixmiller of Fishers, Julie Creek of Fort Wayne, Jeff Creek of Bloomington, and Teresa Creek of Bloomington.
Her husband died in 2022. She was also preceded in death by her parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be at 1 pm Monday, May 4 at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home in Vincennes, with calling from 11 to 1 pm at the funeral home before the service. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vincennes. Goodwin-Sievers is honored and privileged to be entrusted with the care of Glenda and her family.
Memorials may be made to the Glenda Shoultz Schaefer Scholarship at South Knox Education Foundation or charity of donor’s choice.
