James "Jim" Lorel Coleman, 95, entered peacefully into the arms of his Lord and savior on November 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and devoted caregivers.

Born in New Albany, Indiana, on September 24, 1930, to Lorel "Coke" and Helen (Cooper) Coleman, Jim grew up in southern Indiana between Winslow and Petersburg. He graduated from high school in 1948 and went on to earn a B.S. in English and Physical Education from Wabash College and Oakland City College, followed by an M.S. in Education from Indiana University.

On June 14, 1953, Jim married the love of his life, Dolores Bonewitz after meeting on a blind date-a union that would span more than six decades. Jim often joked that marrying Dolores was the best decision he ever made. Together they brought joy to everyone who knew them.

In 1954, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army and served at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. It was there, after being assigned to the detail accompanying President Eisenhower on the golf course, that Jim discovered the game that would become his lifelong passion.

Jim devoted his career to education in southern Indiana as a teacher, coach, and administrator. From his first position as a basketball coach in Newburgh to roles in Stendal, Spurgeon, and ultimately Vincennes, Jim found his calling. He coached basketball, golf, and cross-country, inspiring countless young people to strive for excellence-not only in sports but in life. His home, shared with Dolores, was a gathering place for teams before games and meets, where spaghetti dinners and pancake breakfasts were served with encouragement and care. Even in retirement, former students reached out to share memories and gratitude for the lessons he imparted.

Jim and Dolores spent their later years in Sebring, Florida, where Jim continued to play golf, follow sports, and mentor friends and family. Known for his skill in crafting and adjusting golf clubs, he delighted in helping others improve their game. His most joyous times, however, were spent on the road traveling with Dolores to see his children and grandchildren, and hosting them in their home for laughter, games, endless storytelling, and ALWAYS a great breakfast by Jim.

Jim was preceded in death by Dolores, his wife of 72 years; his daughter, Debra Lynn; his parents; and his younger brother, Dan Coleman.

He is survived by his children, Cassie {Mike) Gambrell and James {Janet) Coleman; his brother-in-law, Mike {Josette) Bonewitz; grandchildren Myriah {Shonn) Gambrell-Glenn, Mycah {Jeff) Gambrell-Ermak, Jason{Sophie) Coleman, and Jennifer {Steve) Coleman-Schabel; and great-grandchildren Ainsley, Carter, and Jackson Glenn, and Mila and Nora Ermak.

A family gathering and celebration of Jim's life will be held in Vincennes, Indiana on August 6, 2026 beginning at 12:15 pm est at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Dave Duke officiating.
