James M. Steimel, 87, of Washington, Indiana passed away October 27, 2025. He was born in Vincennes, Indiana on January 30, 1938, to the late Leo and Agnes Steimel. Jim attended Bruceville High School and graduated in 1956. He served for two years with the U.S. Army in Korea before continuing his education at Vincennes University where he graduated with his associate's degree. After completing his education, Jim began his career with Hoosier Gas as a field engineer in Vincennes. Jim and his family moved to Washington in 1968 when he was promoted to Washington District Manager, and he retired after 42 years of service.
Jim was an active member of his community and loved being involved. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope, Rotary Club (past president), Chairman of the United Way’s Commercial and Leadership division, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, Chamber of Commerce Board, YMCA Board of Directors (past president) and Building Committee during construction of the Gwaltney Aquatic Center, Industrial Development Committee, Daviess County Growth Council, Daviess County Revolving Fund, Washington Catholic Athletic Booster Club, and was a city Councilman for 4 terms. Jim was most proud of receiving the Hagel Award for service to the community. In his free time, Jim enjoyed watching his sons participate in a multitude of sports for more than 30 years and refereeing basketball. Jim will be deeply missed.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Agnes Steimel; wife Janet (Brocksmith) Steimel; siblings Robert Steimel, Norma Cary, Patricia Clark, Betty Stephens, Bill Steimel, Chuck Steimel, Richard Steimel, Jack Steimel, Sam Steimel, Margie Steimel, and Maretta Early. He is survived by his wife Eleanor Steimel; children Brad (Jan) Steimel, Jeff Steimel, Rodney (Dawn) Steimel, Shane (Kristen) Steimel, Blaine (Nicah) Steimel; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Goodwin-Sievers is honored to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Steimel. Visitation will be held at 2020 State Street in Washington on October 30, 2025, from 4-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Hope on October 31, 2025, at 9 am with burial and military rites following at Bethel Cemetery in Freelandville, Indiana.
