Larry Stephen Walker went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 19, 2026. Steve was born in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky on May 31, 1947 to Dick and Virginia (Majors) Walker. The Walker family then moved to their beloved Walker farm near Gentryville, Indiana. Steve attended Gentryville grade school and then graduated from Dale High School. While in high school he participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He graduated from DePauw University majoring in mathematics and was a member of the Sigma Chi social fraternity. While at DePauw, he played baseball. After graduating in 1969, he married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Jane Wilson. He then began his teaching career of 41 years at Washington High School, where he taught mathematics and coached baseball and football. Steve retired in 2010.
Steve loved teaching math, coaching, fishing, mushroom hunting, and hunting. Most of all he was so proud of his family and loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Washington where he served on the Deacon and Trustee Board. He also helped with the Food Pantry and was a part time Sunday School teacher. He never met a stranger and loved talking with everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, of 56 years, a son Dr. Michael (Julie) Walker of Washington, a daughter Jennifer (Tom) Gross of Roanoke, and 7 grandchildren: Clay (Amy) Walker, Abby Walker, Ashley Walker, Grace Gross, Jeff Gross, Tyler Gross, and Matthew Gross. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers Dr. Dick (Beth) Walker of Crawfordsville, and David Walker of Bowling Green, Kentucky as well as several nieces and nephews. Steve is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ramona.
The viewing will be on May 5 from 4-8 PM at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St., Washington, IN 47501. Steve’s funeral will be May 6 at 10:00 AM, also at the funeral home, followed with a graveside service at Gentryville Garden of Memory.
