Mary Pearl (Way) Batchelor, 86, of Washington, Indiana, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, May 7, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 5, 1939, to the late Earl & Dimple (Wade) Way in Daviess County, Indiana. Mary spent her adolescence growing up in Daviess County, and it is where she gained her tomboy nature that gave her the family nickname “Butch.”
Mary graduated from Washington High School and was a member of the 1957 class. On April 19, 1959, Mary married the love of her life, Wayne Batchelor, and they shared over 67 years together.
Mary worked as a salesclerk for G.C. Murphy in Washington for many years and then went on to work at the Igleheart Feed Mill. She was a member of Bethel Church of Washington and served as their Sunday school teacher and youth leader, and she also made sure the church bulletins were always ready to hand out on Sunday’s. Mary also would take the youth groups and scouts on camping trips throughout the years. She was a charter member, and the president of the Country Ladies Homemaker’s Club. Additionally, Mary served in her community as a 4-H leader for many years.
She loved to bake, and throughout the years baked hundreds of wedding cakes and was known for her zucchini bread. Mary was also a talented seamstress; making a few suits over the years for her husband, costumes for neighbor kids on Halloween, and the most recent was her homemade face masks to wear during the COVID-19 pandemic. She liked to sit on the porch and rock, and to mow. Mary was proud of her marriage. Mary was devoted wife and credited the longevity & success of her and Wayne’s marriage to togetherness. No matter what, they would work through anything, always together.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Earl & Dimple; her sister, Maxine Ham; and her nephew, Curt Ham.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Wayne Batchelor; her niece, Debbi (Mons) Dybevik; and her nephew, Steve (Joyce) Ham.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 1:00-3:00pm ET at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home 2020 State St., Washington, IN 47501. A celebration of life will begin at 3:00pm with Pastor Tony Franklin officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bethel Cemetery Fund.
