Patricia (Pat) Anne Riney, 72, of Washington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, with family by her side. Born July 12, 1954, to Dona and Bonnie Grider, Pat spent her entire life in Washington, a community she loved deeply and was proud to call home.
Pat was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. She was married to the love of her life, Steve Riney, for 41 years. Their love for one another was unmistakable and served as a beautiful testament to marriage, friendship, and a life shared together.
Family was Pat’s greatest joy. There was no such thing as “extended family” to her; if you were family, you were hers. She proudly hosted the family’s annual Thanksgiving celebration, sometimes welcoming as many as 70 people into her home—and always finding room for one more. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren and loved watching each of them pursue the things they loved. To her grandchildren, she was lovingly known as “Grammy,” but she never simply watched from the sidelines. She played cards, board games, and make-believe right alongside them.
Pat earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Indiana State University and dedicated her career to caring for and inspiring children. She spent most of her teaching career at Lena Dunn Elementary School, where she taught first, second, and fourth grades before serving as a Title I reading specialist. Helping children succeed was more than her profession—it was part of who she was.
Pat was compassionate, fiercely protective, deeply moral, and a true social butterfly. Known affectionately by many as “Ms. Riney,” she had a gift for taking care of everyone around her and turning any gathering into a good time. She was an exceptional cook, famous for her homemade Christmas fudge and her locally celebrated peach cobbler. Pat was a devout Catholic and loved attending St. Peter's Church in Montgomery, where she enjoyed serving on various committees and participating in group bible study. She loved flowers and gardening, the Saint Louis Cardinals, the Indianapolis Colts, and Purdue sports, and especially enjoyed long Jeep rides with Steve during their retirement.
Pat is survived by her husband, Steve; children Melissa Traylor (Wes), Eric Shrader (Kristy), and Matt Riney (Megan); grandchildren Ciera, Anna, Ty, Abree, Milo, Marshall, and Malcolm; siblings Gary Grider and Connie Ritterskamp; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dona and Bonnie Grider, and her brother, Bruce Grider.
Pat taught her family many things, but most importantly, she taught them how to be a good person. Her kindness, generosity, laughter, and love will live on in everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
The visitation will be held on Friday, August 14th, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home in Washington, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15th, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Montgomery, IN. Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home is privileged and honored to be entrusted with the care of Pat and her family.
