Robert Louis Lagemann, 89, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away on March 24th 2013. Mr. Lagemann was born April 11 1923 to Alfred Frederick Lagemann and Mabel Bowman in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he grew up, graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, class of 1943, and briefly continued his education at Hanover College.During World War II he served in the Merchant Marines as crew on an oil tanker. Following the war he served in the U.S. Army in Germany where he met Rosa Tschanter, whom he married March 26, 1953. They had one daughter Phoebe Alice Lagemann Derwort. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Lagemann continued his education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, receiving both his BA and MA degrees.His career in the U.S. Park service included several years as historian at Antietam Battleground in Sharpsburg, MD, where he had the pleasure of giving a tour to John F. Kennedy. He then transferred to the George Rogers Clark Memorial where he was Superintendent for some time. While at George Rogers Clark Memorial he was also given the pleasure to give Robert F. Kennedy a tour. He also had a big part in getting the Visitor's Center built.After retiring from the Park Service he continued contributing to the Vincennes community teaching English as a second language at VU and working on research with the Knox County Historical Society. Mr. Lagemann was also instrumental in establishing a public park. He was also the greeter at Wal-Mart for many years.He is preceded in death by his parents and daughter. He is survived by his granddaughter, Rebecca Derwort of Vincennes, his sister Marjorie Lagemann Snodgrass and husband Phil. Four nieces Martha Sue, Jennifer, Amy and Emily. Two cousins, Viola Duckworth of St. Louis and Jean Eaton of Oberlin, OH.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway. Friends may visit with Mr. Lagemann's family from noon until the service time of 2:00 pm on Saturday. On line condolences may be sent at www.goodwinfamilyfh.com.
