Suzanne Mardis, 90, of Vincennes, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026. Born on January 4, 1936 in Bastrop, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents Grimes and Ruth Minyard, her sisters Barbara George and Ramona Holcomb and her beloved husband of 40 years James O. (Rig) Mardis Sr.
Sue lived a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, education and community. She spent most of her adult life in Vincennes, where she built lasting friendships and touched countless lives through her kindness and generous spirit.
Sue graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in education and later returned to school to earn her master’s degree in education, demonstrating her lifelong belief in learning and personal growth. While at school she met her future husband Rig, “the tall tornado,” as well as beginning a lifelong friendship with Charlie and Joanne Malone. Together they enjoyed countless fishing trips, football games and spending time with their families. She opened the Jasmine Basket gift shop in 1981 where her creativity and welcoming nature made every customer feel at home.
A longtime and faithful member of First United Methodist Church, Sue lived her faith through service, compassion and quiet strength. She found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments – tending flowers, watching birds and cheering enthusiastically from the stands at countless sporting events.
Nothing meant more to Sue than her family, to whom she was affectionately called “Mamaw.” Sue is survived by her two brothers, Butch and Bill Minyard; her three children, Jim Mardis Jr. (Julie), Michele Anzel (Dave) and Annie Kubiak (Andy), as well her cherished nephew, Micheal Mardis (Natalie). She was blessed with nine grandchildren, Christian, Walker, Cameron (Brooke), Gerik, Lauren, Kelsey, Zach, Sam, Luke and one great-grandchild, Callie Jane.
Sue will be remembered for her warm heart, her love of family and the grace with which she lived her life. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the lives of all who knew and loved her. Visitation to be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 10 - 11am at First United Methodist Church in Vincennes with a memorial service at 11am. Graveside services immediately following at Memorial Park Cemetery in Vincennes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
