Thomas Arthur Gress, 83, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 10:45am at Daviess Community Hospital in Washington.
He was born on March 8, 1943, to the late Rex Gress Sr., & Ermel Onida (Clements) Gress, in Daviess County, IN.
Tom attended Washington High School and was a member of the 1961 graduating class. He also attended Johnson Bible College for over a year. On June 8, 1985, Tom married the love of his life, Diana L. (Sharp) Gress, and they shared over 40 years together.
Tom spent his working career as a superintendent. He worked for many years at Evansville German Township and served as the superintendent of the Washington City Water Department as well. He was an active city councilman for the city of Washington for 7 years. Tom spent some time working as the inspector for Midwest Engineers, and he also worked for TA Gress Trucking Company. He was the proud owner and operator of Gress Excavating in which he co-founded with his son, Rob Gress, in Washington for many years. Tom was a member of First Christian Church in Washington and served on the board as an Elder. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. In his free time, Tom enjoyed going golfing, and working in his garden. His family was his pride and joy. His love for his family stood above all. His greatest hobby was finding joy in their joy. Throughout the years, you could find him cheering his sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at all of their various sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex & Ermel; his daughter, Lisa Heldt; and his brother and sister, Rex Gress, and Judy Hay; and his stepfather, Tommy Rose.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Diana L. Gress; his children, Rob Gress and his wife Kristie, and Cathy Wethington; his grandchildren, Kelci and Kyle Greenwell, Lindsey and Ryan Russell, Hunter Wethington, Laci and Jacob Pollack, Jerrica Perkins, and Chase Gress; his great-grandchildren, Madeline (Delono) Black, Xander (Emma Pollack), Keeley Russell, Emma Hamm, Raylee Perkins, Liam Hamm, Kaesyn Memmer, Kole Memmer, Harper Pollack, Kye Perkins, Jackson Gress, Klay Greenwell, Annabelle Gress, and Dawson Perkins; and his great-great-granddaughter, Xenobia Black.
Visitation for Tom will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10:00am-1:00pm ET at First Christian Church 117 NE 3rd St., Washington, IN 47501. A funeral service will follow, beginning at 1:00pm, with Byron Holtsclaw officiating. Following the service, Tom will be laid to rest at Sugarland Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church.
